Thistle was the name by which a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickly margins was commonly known. It was the floral emblem of Scotland.

In 2267, having sternly ordered Montgomery Scott not to take further unauthorized action against Apollo, James T. Kirk relented and light-heartedly called him a "stiff-necked thistle head." (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
