In 2151, "Tholia" was one of four proper nouns stated by the Klingon courier Klaang while being transported to Qo'noS aboard Enterprise NX-01. Ensign Hoshi Sato, Enterprise's communications officer, was unable to translate the word. (ENT: "Broken Bow")

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 35), Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Stellar Cartography", p. 10), and The Worlds of the Federation (p. 150), Tholia was the home planet of the Tholian species. A class Y planet with a searing hot methane environment, it was the second planet in the Tholian system. In general, an association of "Tholia" with the Tholians is sensible, as they are later revealed to be a faction (if a rather obscure one) of the Temporal Cold War – the very conflict that ended Klaang on Enterprise in the first place.
