A tongue was a maneuverable muscle in a lifeform's mouth, used to aid in speech and eating. The tongue had taste buds for the latter one.

The Butterfly dancers of Rigel X had unusually long tongues, which allowed them to grab butterflies with them. (ENT: "Broken Bow")

In the alternate reality James T. Kirk developed numb tongue following an allergic reaction to the Melvaran mud flea vaccine. (Star Trek)

The Ayt, a species present on Earth in the alternate reality, connected their tongues upon meeting at the Port of San Francisco bar. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
