A Federation class J transport

For the matter-energy transportation device, please see Transporter.

In starship classification, a transport ship was a limited role starship, similar in function to a shuttle, but designed to carry people or supplies.

Rarely, some transports were categorized as space cruisers, others were categorized as colony transport ships. (TOS: "The Way to Eden"; TNG: "The Ensigns of Command") Additionally, some vessels were also categorized as short-range transports. Dolamide was a material used for building these transports. (DS9: "Dramatis Personae")

The Federation differentiated transports into one of two categories: commercial and non-commercial. (TNG: "Inheritance")

Unlike freighters, which generally carried only cargo, transports ranged from civilian personnel carriers to military troop transports and were used for carrying a few dozen to several hundred passengers or troops. In 2370, the Maquis were in search of troop transports, among other weapon supplies, to help bolster their position in the Demilitarized Zone. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")

While more specialized transports, such as colony ships, were designed to transport personnel for planetary colonization.

In the 2260s of the alternate reality, information on transport vessels was located in the Federation database. (Star Trek Beyond)

Transport vessels were mentioned in a list of vessel types, which appeared to the left of the personnel file for Balthazar Edison. [1]
