Commodore Travers was a male Starfleet flag officer in the 23rd century. He was the commander of the observation outpost on Cestus III in 2267. Travers was famous for his hospitality, in part, thanks to his personal chef, whom Leonard McCoy wondered if he had brought along to the planet. James T. Kirk guessed he probably had, as his rank would have given him the right to do so.
That same year, the Gorn, who regarded Cestus III as part of their space, attacked and destroyed this outpost. Travers presumably died in this attack. After destroying the outpost, the Gorn faked several messages from the commodore to lure the USS Enterprise into a trap. Because of these messages, Captain Kirk and his landing party beamed down and were attacked immediately by the Gorn. (TOS: "Arena")
Travers only appears as an off-screen voiceover provided by an unknown actor.
He appears in the Pocket TNG novel Requiem, in which Jean-Luc Picard is thrown back in time to just before Kirk and the Gorn commander's fight. He is suspicious of "Dixon Hill", the alias Picard uses while there.
The novel Open Secrets gives him the first name Howard.
