The USS Ajax (NCC-11574) was a Federation Apollo-class starship that was in service with Starfleet from the early to mid-24th century.

In 2327, Captain Narth was the commanding officer of the Ajax. Ensign Cortan Zweller was first assigned to the Ajax following his graduation from Starfleet Academy. (TNG: "Tapestry")

The Ajax was one of the ships that received Kosinski's experimental warp drive upgrades in 2364. The engineering staff reported a measurable increase in performance and engine efficiency following the upgrade. It was later suggested that these enhancements in performance may have been attributed to straightening out simple engine inefficiencies experienced by the older ship. (TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before")

In 2367, the Ajax was on a deep space exploration mission in Sector 21834. The Ajax was listed in a starship mission status chart that was displayed on the bridge of the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Brothers" okudagram)

In 2368, the Ajax was assigned to Captain Picard's fleet that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. It served as a focal point in the tachyon detection grid, as it was linked to thirteen other starships during the grid's initial deployment. This grid was displayed on the bridge of the Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Redemption II", okudagram)

In 2369, the Ajax was on a deep space exploration mission in Sector 21396. The Ajax was listed in a starship mission status chart that was displayed in the observation lounge of the Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part I", okudagram)

Appendices

Background information

Starfleet Mission Status, 2367

The Ajax was listed on a starship mission status in 2367

In the episode "Brothers", the Ajax was identified as an Excelsior-class starship with the registry of NCC-13554.

The registry was retconed in the tachyon detection grid in "Redemption, II". A later version of the starship mission status retconed the Ajax as an Apollo-class starship.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, this ship was "named for two heroes from Greek mythology who fought in the Trojan War, Ajax of Salamis and Ajax of Locris." (citation needededit)

Apocrypha

The Stargazer novel Gauntlet suggests that Cortan Zweller was second officer of the Ajax by 2333.

According to an okudagram that appears in the Simon and Schuster PC Game Star Trek: Captain's Chair, the Ajax was on a deep space exploration mission to Sector 21396 in 2369.

The Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph featured a listing of a Saladin-class Ajax with the registry NCC-547 (it was of the Cochise-subclass).

In Star Trek: Legacy, Ajax appeared as a playable starship, designated as a scout.
