The USS Cabot (NCC-1427) was a 23rd century Federation Magee-class starship operated by Starfleet.
History[]
Sometime in the 2250s or early 2260s, Captain Lynne Lucero assumed command of the Cabot. Her first mission brought her and the Cabot to Pragine 63, a planet on the edge of Klingon space which was facing starvation.
Shortly after, scientist Edward Larkin brought to Lucero's attention that he could modify the DNA of tribbles in order to increase their reproductive rate for use as a food source. Captain Lucero denied his request. Larkin went against these orders, and used his own DNA to modify the tribbles' reproductive rate, much to the disgust of the crew. The tribbles quickly started breeding, now being born pregnant, and easily escaped containment infecting the ship's systems. Efforts to contain the tribbles proved ineffective, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Larkin's pettiness and refusal to understand the horrific mistake he had made led him to refuse to evacuate, leading to his death after he was subsumed by the swarm of tribbles he had created.
Eventually, the sheer force of the tribbles pressed against the bulkheads caused the ship to break apart, or suffering a "total and complete structural failure" in the words of Fleet Admiral Quinn, the Starfleet board-of-inquiry chairman, resulting in its destruction and the death of Larkin. At least some of the wreckage, housing surviving tribbles, landed on Pragine 63, leading to the tribbles devastating the planet's ecosystem and eventually making their way to Klingon space.
