J class trainee cadets []

These cadets were training on a Class J cadet ship when one of the baffle plates ruptured, exposing them to delta rays. Fleet captain Christopher Pike, who was on an inspection tour of the vessel at the time, rescued all cadets still alive, an action that ended up trapping him in the affected room, causing him to suffer severe radiation poisoning that left him paralyzed and unable to communicate naturally. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I", DIS: "Through the Valley of Shadows", SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

These cadets were only mentioned in dialogue in "The Menagerie, Part I". They were seen in illusory form in "Through the Valley of Shadows" and as flashbacks in "Strange New Worlds".
According to "Children of the Comet", the names of the cadets Pike saved are Muliq Al Alcazar, T'quiel Dawn, Yuuto Hoshide, Andrea Lopez and Dusty Swender.
According to "A Quality of Mercy", two cadets died in the accident, one of whom was Maat Al-Salah.

This lieutenant was played by background actor Bill Baker who received no credit for this part.
He was given the name Croy (β) in the novelization of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

Engineering officer trainees []

These engineering trainees were assigned to the machine room of the Enterprise during the training cruise and Khan Noonien Singh's attack. They were present when Admiral James T. Kirk visited the ship shortly before its launch. Both cadets were later present at the memorial service for Spock.

The third engineering trainee stood next to Montgomery Scott during the boarding of Admiral Kirk. He was present in engineering during Kirk's inspection of the machine room and also during the attack of the Reliant. He was wounded and present in sickbay where several engineers were treated. Later, he was back in engineering and witnessed Spock's actions and his death.

The fourth and fifth trainees were present in engineering during Khan's attack. Caused by explosions they were thrown through the section and had to be evacuated. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

All engineering cadets were played by background and stunt performers.
The distressed costume worn by Daniel Wong in the sickbay scene was later sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. It identified him as able seaman. [1]
