"My cousin was on the Europa when it went down. She and eight thousand others are dead because of you."
Psycho to Michael Burnham, 2256 ("Context Is for Kings")

The USS Europa (NCC-1648) was a 23rd century Federation Nimitz-class starship operated by Starfleet under the command of Admiral Brett Anderson.

Service history[]

In 2256, the Europa was one of the nearest Federation starships sent to rendezvous with the USS Shenzhou following contact with an unidentified Klingon vessel during the Battle of the Binary Stars in 2256. (DIS: "The Vulcan Hello")

USS Europa destroyed

The Europa self destructs

The Europa served as Admiral Anderson's flagship and transported him to the rendezvous with the Klingons. After Anderson contacted the Klingon commander, T'Kuvma, a massive cloaked Klingon vessel rammed the Europa, causing critical damage. As escape pods launched from the Europa, the vessel's antimatter containment field was deliberately breached, destroying both ships. (DIS: "Battle at the Binary Stars")

According to the inmate Psycho, she had a cousin who died on board the Europa. A display of the Europa was visible in the mess hall aboard the USS Discovery when Psycho visited that area shortly after arriving aboard the Discovery six months after the battle. (DIS: "Context Is for Kings")

According to an anything but canon account, Spock shared footage of the Europa's destruction from a blooper reel during a First Contact Day party. (VST: "Holiday Party")

Background information[]

The Europa was initially referenced in Star Trek: Discovery premiere "The Vulcan Hello" before appearing in "Battle of the Binary Stars" and "Context Is for Kings".

Europa may be named for the eponymous moon of Jupiter discovered by Galileo Galilei, or for its namesake in Greek mythology.

Apocrypha[]

In 2018, Star Trek Online introduced the Europa-class (β) as a 25th century cosmetic skin and in-universe successor to the Nimitz-class. [1]
