The USS Gagarin (NCC-1309) was a Federation Shepard-class starship operated by Starfleet during the mid-23rd century. At the time of its destruction, the ship was commanded by Captain T'Shen Kovil.
History[]
In 2256, during the Federation-Klingon War, this ship was in the same sector as the USS Hoover and the USS Muroc when they were simultaneously ambushed by Klingons. The Gagarin faced six warships.
After losing warp drive, Captain Kovil sent a distress call, to which the USS Discovery responded. The Discovery attempted to relieve the pressure on the Gagarin, but was unable to interdict a torpedo fired by a Bird-of-Prey that destroyed the Gagarin with all hands. The loss of the three Federation starships resulted in 462 Starfleet casualties. (DIS: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum")
The ship was later recovered, updated with new nacelles, and returned to service, whereupon in 2261 it was stationed at Starbase 1 for the Federation Day Centennial. (SNW: "Wedding Bell Blues")
In 2384, the Gagarin appeared on the bridge chart of the USS Dauntless logistics strategic data display. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 1")
In 2401, the Gagarin-class honored the legacy of the previous Shepard-class USS Gagarin. (PIC: "The Star Gazer")

Background information[]
At one stage of planning for Star Trek: Discovery season 1, John Eaves used the provisional name USS Gagarin (NCC-1261) for the Vostok class, a ship class with a Vulcan-style warp ring which ultimately was not used in the finalized series. [2]
Apocrypha[]
In 2019, Star Trek Online introduced the Gagarin class miracle worker battlecruiser, a 25th century successor to the Shepard class, named in honor of the 23rd century USS Gagarin which fell in the Klingon war. [3]
