Revision as of 13:49, 22 March 2018

For the 23th century vessel of the same name, please see USS Grissom (NCC-638).

The USS Grissom was a 24th century Federation starship operated by Starfleet.

In 2366, the Grissom was assigned near the Sigma Eridani system and stood by to supply the USS Enterprise-D with additional hytritium during the latter's mission to Beta Agni II. (TNG: "The Most Toys")

The Grissom saw action during the Dominion War and was destroyed in 2375 at the Battle of Ricktor Prime, with a loss of all but six out of a crew of 1,250. Lieutenant Chu'lak was one of the survivors. (DS9: "Field of Fire")

Background information

The Grissom was identified as an Oberth-class scout with the registry NCC-59314 in an internal list of starships, dated 26 September 1990. [1] This information would become the original source for the main Grissom entry found in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (1st ed., p. 320). A starboard profile of the ship featuring the same information also made an appearance on p. 317.

Contrarily, in the same edition of the Encyclopedia (p. 118), the Grissiom was identified as an Excelsior-class starship with the registry of NCC-42857. For the second and third edition (p. 472), in the list of Federation starships, the information was changed, with the Grissom now being an Excelsior-class starship with this new registry.

Finally, in the fourth edition of the Encyclopedia (p. 331), in the list of Federation starships, the Grissom reverts back to being an Oberth-class ship and bears the registry of the Excelsior-class ship.

Apocrypha

The Grissom was mentioned as playing a central role in the life of Mackenzie Calhoun in Pocket Books' Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels written by Peter David. The story of the ship's disastrous Prime Directive violation and loss of its captain, Norman Kenyon, in 2371, is told in the novel Once Burned.
