The captain of the Jenolan was responsible for the ship's mission to Norpin V.

According to Scott, en route, the Jenolan experienced an overload in on of the plasma transfer conduits, so the captain brought the ship out of warp, where after it hit some gravimetric interference and they discovered the Dyson sphere. Thereafter, he had the ship investigate the sphere by beginning a standard survey of the surface. Just as they completed the initial orbital scan, the Jenolan's aft power coils exploded after the ship attempted to hail one of the sphere's access terminals, and the ship got caught in the sphere's gravity well and crash landed on the surface of the sphere, killing the captain and the crew. This captain was only mentioned in dialogue.

The novelization of the episode established that the captain's name was James Armstrong. In his late 30's, Armstrong was unhappy being assigned to command a transport, and was envious of several of his former academy classmates who had been assigned as captain to more prestigious ships. He regarded the discovery of the Dyson sphere as "his ticket to a real command", though he ultimately died when the Jenolan crashed.
