The following officers served aboard the USS Saratoga (NCC-1887) in 2286:

Unnamed personnel

Saratoga captain (2286)

The Saratoga's captain was a Human female. In 2286, her ship was rendered powerless by an unknown alien probe attempting to contact the humpback whales of Earth. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

This unnamed officer, played by Madge Sinclair, is the first female Starfleet starship captain portrayed on Star Trek (despite the quizzical TOS: "Turnabout Intruder" reference where Janice Lester believes female captains are an impossibility). In the Pocket Books novel adaptation she is referred to as Captain Alexander (β), but there is no filmed evidence that this was canonically intended to be her name. Several novels, including The Star to Every Wandering, establishes her name as Margaret Alexander and The Star to Every Wandering shows her to have served with Captain Kirk before becoming a captain. She later became married, changing her surname to Sinclair-Alexander and she was promoted to admiral. She was also the officer who recruited Kirk to go on the USS Enterprise-B for the christening ceremony.
Although Sinclair's character is the first female captain seen in Star Trek, she is not the first female character to be depicted commanding a starship. In "The Lorelei Signal", Uhura assumed command of the Enterprise. The first female character depicted commanding a starship in live-action Trek was Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
In-universe, the first female captain known is Hernandez, the captain of the Columbia NX-02, though T'Pol was seen in command of the Enterprise NX-01 several times as science officer, and made captain in more than one alternate timeline before Columbia launched.

Science officer

Saratoga science officer (2286)

This science officer informed the captain that the Whale Probe's call was being carried on an amplification wave that was negatively affecting their systems. He later delivered the damage report, informing her that they were only operating on reserve power, as all systems had failed.

The science officer was played by Mike Brislane.

Saratoga helmsman (2286)

This helmsman identified the Whale Probe as a probe of unknown origin, then informed the captain that Starfleet Command was standing by to receive their communications. He later added that thruster controls and emergency thrusters were gone. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

The helmsman was played by actor Nick Ramus. The novelization gives his name as Chitirih Ra-Dreii (β).
The makeup was sculpted by Brian Wade and applied by Rick Stratton and consisted of a forehead piece, and nose piece, lace hair and contact lenses.
The alien bridge officer was identified in production material as an Efrosian; his makeup design was later reused for the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
