The USS Solvang (NCC-12101) was a Federation California-class starship operated by Starfleet, launched and destroyed in 2380.
That year, Captain Dayton was the ship's commanding officer. Dayton was given command following the loss of her previous ship, the USS Rubidoux.
While surveying a star in the Kalla system, the ship was suddenly attacked, and severely weakened by a Pakled Clumpship. While Dayton tried to escape, a mining arm took hold of one of the warp nacelles of the Solvang. To break free, Dayton ordered going to warp, but the nacelle was torn from the ship, causing a massive explosion that obliterated the Solvang and killed all hands.
The USS Cerritos received a partial distress call, but her crew failed to take it seriously enough when responding due to Dayton's infamous skittishness and history of false alarms, leaving them blindsided when they encountered the Clumpship and discovered what had happened to the Solvang. When the Cerritos was grabbed by mining arms in a near-identical fashion to what had led to the Solvang's destruction, Captain Carol Freeman realized the fatal mistake Dayton had made and overruled Commander Jack Ransom's order to go to warp, saving the Cerritos from sharing the Solvang's fate.
