- Years ago, Lt. Uhura befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo, the land of graceful, cat-like beings. The two women exchanged forbidden music and promised never to reveal their secret.
- Now the USS Enterprise is orbiting Eeiauo in a desperate race to save the inhabitants before a deadly plague destroys them. Uhura's secret songs may hold the key to a cure – but the clues are veiled in layers of mystery. The plague is killing Humans, threatening other planets – and Captain Kirk must crack the code before the Enterprise succumbs.

- This is the only Star Trek novel written by Janet Kagan.
- When this novel was released by Titan Books in the UK, it was released as a "Giant" novel and not as part of the normal numbered series. It was one of four such releases – the others being Dwellers in the Crucible, Shadow Lord, and Pawns and Symbols.
- A limited edition hardcover was printed by Gregg Press in 1985.
- Bookriot.com ranked the novel among as one of the best Star Trek novels. [1]
