In geography, underground, subsurface, or subterranean referred to an area below the surface of a planet or other planetary body. Underground structures could be man-made or naturally forming geographical features. A subsurface chart or subsurface scan could detail these areas.
In 2259, the USS Enterprise detected an enormous, mostly subterranean structure inside the comet C/2260-Quentin which suggested alien intelligence. (SNW: "Children of the Comet")
In 2268, while being held captive underground on the planet Minara II, Doctor Leonard McCoy commented that men weren't intended to live so far underground and that it wasn't natural. (TOS: "The Empath")
In 2365, on the planet Iconia, Lieutenant Commander Data detected a vast underground power source which was controlled by a console. (TNG: "Contagion")
