The ship piloted by this individual was damaged during the Borg-Species 8472 War. When the other members of its species retreated into fluidic space, it was left behind, leaving it trapped in the Delta Quadrant.
The following six months it was tracked by Hirogen hunting parties, who studied its behavior and tracked it for fifty light years, until it retreated into an asteroid belt for what the Hirogen believed was making a final stand. It went into the caves on an asteroid where it attacked the Alpha and Beta-Hirogen but was seriously wounded by the Hirogen rifle.
Believing this member of Species 8472 was dead, the Hirogen transported it aboard their vessel to denaturate their prey. Aboard their ship, Species 8472 attacked the two Hirogen, decapitating the Beta and seriously wounding the Alpha.
When an away team of the USS Voyager transported the Alpha-Hirogen aboard their ship and treated him, the members of Species 8472 also boarded the ship through a hatch into Jefferies tube 84. Still wounded, it left some mixture of DNA and polyfluidic compound behind. Still wounded it attempted to open a quantum singularity from the Deflector Control on deck 11 to return into fluidic space but was stopped by the crew of the Voyager by using Borg nanoprobes. The Alpha-Hirogen, who accompanied the Voyager team, shot at Species 8472 and was arrested behind a force field in sickbay.
When six Hirogen ships attacked Voyager and claimed their prey, Captain Kathryn Janeway defended the member of Species 8472 and threatened the Hirogen. The Alpha-Hirogen escaped from sickbay and attacked the member of Species 8472 in a hand-to-hand combat. Seven of Nine then beamed the two combatants aboard one of the Hirogen ships. (VOY: "Prey")
