Background information[]
The term 'Ursinoid' originally appeared in the storyboard art for "Mudd's Passion" and was later adopted by the Star Trek Concordance.
Ursinoid subsequently appeared in the novelization of "Mudd's Passion" (published in Star Trek Log 3). In the novelization, the male Ursinoid is named Shu-luft, although the female (said to be Shu-luft's wife) remains unnamed. Also, the only dialogue that is spoken by either of the two Ursinoids is said not by the female (as it is in the episode itself) but by Shu-luft.
The character of Urgar (β), in the novel Sword of Damocles, was also described as being of Ursinoid origin.
