Vellek's diary was a research diary created by the Romulan Doctor Vellek chronicling his studies of the Progenitor technology. After Vellek's science ship sustained critical damage around 2391, Vellek feared that his knowledge of the Progenitors would be lost, and he placed the diary in a tan zhekran secured in a cloaked vault, and transmitted a distress call with a clue to his piece of the map, though the message was partially garbled and could not be followed up on at the time. (DIS: "Red Directive")

In 3191, Vellek's ship was found by the United Federation of Planets and the couriers Moll and L'ak who were able to recover the tan zhekran and took it to Fred who was able to open the box and retrieve the diary. After seeing the contents, Fred refused to return the diary to Moll and L'ak who destroyed the android, retrieved it and managed to escape with it again. The discovery triggered a search by both parties for the Progenitors' technology. Using Fred's memories of the diary, Captain Michael Burnham was able to identify the first piece of the map as being hidden in the Vileen system. (DIS: "Red Directive")

After retrieving the first piece, Burnham had Zora replicate a symbol from the diary out of programmable matter which proved to be the base of the map that the five pieces fit into. (DIS: "Under the Twin Moons")

On the ISS Enterprise, while chasing after the third clue, Burnham asked L'ak if he even knew what all of the clues led to and L'ak quoted the diary that it was "power beyond all comprehension." However, L'ak didn't care as long as it could end the erigah that had been placed upon him. (DIS: "Mirrors")

After Moll and L'ak were captured by the USS Locherer, the diary was found stashed on Moll by Commander Nhan's security team. Burnham gave it to Nhan, telling her that they already had some of it on file and requesting that Nhan get it fully translated which Nhan stated would be easy as she had a Romulan on her team. Nhan later explained that the diary had revealed nothing of substance to the treasure hunt aside from a passage where Vellek suggested that the Progenitors' technology could be used to restore life as well as to create it. (DIS: "Erigah")

Moll later quoted the passage of the diary about the technology being able to restore life to the Breen while rallying them to her cause. (DIS: "Labyrinths")
