Virgil was a well-known Roman poet.

A quote from Virgil's work The Aeneid, "Fortune favors the bold" or "Audentes fortuna juvat" in the original Latin language, was used on the dedication plaque of Columbia NX-02. (ENT: "Affliction")

In the 2250s, during his time in the mycelial network, Paul Stamets asked his counterpart from the mirror universe if he was a narcissistic Virgil leading him to judgement in the afterlife. (DIS: "Vaulting Ambition")

Virgil's full name was Publius Vergilius Maro. He was also referred to as "Vergil".

Virgil leading someone in the afterlife is a reference to Dante's Inferno, where Virgil guided Dante through the realm of Hell.
