Weyoun 8 wearing headset

Weyoun wearing virtual headset

Jem'Hadar virtual sensory display visual

Headset view

The virtual sensory display was the speculative name given by Jadzia Dax to pair of portable headset devices used in place of a viewscreen on Dominion warships. It enabled the wearer to view the space around the ship by simply turning their head. The device was also described by Miles O'Brien as a virtual display interface. (DS9: "The Ship")

Elim Garak described it as "like having a viewscreen inside your brain". (DS9: "Rocks and Shoals")

These device's audio and video feeds tied into the ship's com system, (DS9: "Tacking Into the Wind")

There were two known models: a smaller version used on Jem'Hadar attack ships and a larger shoulder-mounted version used on Jem'Hadar battle cruisers. Each ship had only two headsets, one for the Vorta commander and the other for the Jem'Hadar first. (DS9: "The Ship", "Call to Arms")

The display was designed to be worn by Vorta and Jem'Hadar; Humans experienced headaches after wearing the device for an extended period. Cardassians and Bajorans could apparently wear the headset without issues. (DS9: "The Ship", "Call to Arms", "A Time to Stand", "Tacking Into the Wind")

Background information[]

This device was described as a "VR headset" in "The Ship", and a "virtual headset" in the script for "A Time to Stand".

The device was described in "The Ship" script as "connected to the headset piece is a myriad of plasma conduits and odd-looking (TECH) leading to another device that slips on like an exoskeleton hand glove. Several BLINKIES on the device are on."

The device is considered as Star Trek predicting technology, like Google Glass. [1]

Apocrypha[]

The Star Trek: The Dominion War DS9 novelization Call to Arms calls the device a "virtual scanner headset".
