Walter Jack Gotell (15 March 19245 May 1997; age 73) was an actor who portrayed Kurt Mandl in the Star Trek: The Next Generation first season episode "Home Soil".

Born in Bonn, Germany, his most famous role was the part of General Gogol, the head of the KGB, in six films of the James Bond film series from 1977 to 1987. These included Octopussy (1983), co-starring Steven Berkoff and Vijay Amritraj, and The Living Daylights (1987), co-starring John Rhys-Davies. Gotell also played a supporting role in The Scarlet and the Black (1983) as SS General Max Helm. The film starred Christopher Plummer in the lead role as SS Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Kappler.

Gotell also played a German officer in The Guns of Navarone (1961, with James Darren), and ex-Nazi scientist Victor Klemper in The X-Files episode "Paper Clip" (with John Neville).

Gotell passed away from cancer in 1997 in London. [1]
