A wasp is a winged hive insect native to Earth. Wasps are numerous social or solitary insects, chiefly of the superfamilies Vespoidea and Sphecoidea, having a slender body with a constricted abdomen, two pairs of membranous wings, mouths adapted for biting or sucking, and in the females an ovipositor often modified as a sting.
Doctor Leonard McCoy compared the sting of the neural parasite encountered on Deneva to the sting caused by a bee or a wasp, which also leave their stinger in the wound. (TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!")
