In 2373, Jake Sisko and Nog got into trouble while trying to cheer up Benjamin Sisko by attempting to acquire a mint condition 1951 Willie Mays rookie baseball card discovered aboard an old derelict freighter in a subsequent auction held at Quark's. Their quest for the card brought them into contact with Winn Adami, Elias Giger, and Weyoun. After the two came to the attention of the Dominion and were detained by Weyoun, Jake claimed that Mays was a time traveler and it was their mission to apprehend him. Weyoun did not buy the story and let the two go. (DS9: "In the Cards")
The baseball player Willie Hawkins, whom Captain Sisko envisioned in his "Benny Russell" vision in DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars", shared many similarities to Mays, including having been a top player who played in the same position at the same time for the same team, and references contemporaries of Mays.
Along with playing for the Giants, Willie Mays, according to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 28), played for the New York Mets and was a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. One of his career achievements was that he became the first player besides Babe Ruth to hit more than 600 home runs.
