XCV-100 was the registry of a ship built on Earth by the United States of America in the aftermath of World War III. It gained a fearsome reputation in space over the next 200 years as a monstrous scavenger ship, variously called Asaasllich, "Destroyer of Worlds" or Chach-ka, "the Annihilator".
History[]
Sometime in the mid-21st century, in the aftermath of World War III, a group of scientists believed that Earth's environmental crisis was too severe so the United States of America, one of the few nations to survive the war, sifted through the ashes of its space program, scoured the world for a crew, and built a ship that they hoped would carry humanity to civilizations on other worlds. However, the US lost contact with the ship and the crew and their families were presumed lost.
Although the ship survived over the next 200 years grew to a crew of 7,000 people, its culture warped, its purpose going from exploration to piracy to sustain its existence, and undergoing several conversions in order to strip other ships for resources, with the original hull becoming embedded within the massive vessel. It became a bogeyman on the frontier of space and a Destroyer of Worlds. No one ever saw the crew and thus never knew what species they were, but even the Gorn considered them to be monsters. The ship tore apart ships and whole planets, growing in size. Although the ship eventually gained a warp drive, its sheer size made it slow.
The XCV-100's appearance after accumulating other ships' components for roughly 200 years
In 2261, the ship split open the uninhabitated planet Helicon Gamma to harvest aldentium, severely damaging the nearby USS Farragut in the process. When the USS Enterprise arrived to help, the Scavenger Ship captured the Enterprise and began tearing it apart. Two pirates boarded the Enterprise where they were confronted and ultimately killed by Captain Christopher Pike and Lieutenant La'An Noonien-Singh. Possibly because he recognized the unmasked Pike as a fellow Human, one of the invaders didn't kill Pike when he had the chance. The Farragut was able to disable the Scavenger Ship long enough to allow the Enterprise to escape, but was forced to destroy it. The damage to the Farragut kept the crew from being able to beam aboard any survivors and the entire Scavenger Ship crew was lost. The Starfleet personnel were shocked to discover that the mysterious ship that had plagued space for centuries was actually Human.
In the aftermath, the command staff of the two Federation ships found information on the Scavenger Ship's launch in the Enterprise's historical database. Having been witness to its launch, Enterprise Chief Engineer Pelia recalled the original crew as being "the best of us, the most optimistic, searching for a way to carry on the flame of life." The Enterprise and Farragut crews were left wondering what went wrong that could have transformed the ship and its crew from hopeful explorers into monsters. (SNW: "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail")
Markings[]
Close-up of the capsule markings
Even after 200 years in space and heavy modification with new starship parts, the original XCV-100 capsule survived. It was marked with the Flag of the United States of America, the globe-and-arrow logo of the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and the text "XCV-100".

Background information[]
Behind-the-scenes model of the XCV-330.
The XCV-100 appears to be a head-nod to the USS Enterprise (XCV-330), a perennial background Easter egg (which itself was based on early concept sketches for The Original Series USS Enterprise). In addition to the similar registry letters, the XCV-100 nose — the only part of the original Earth ship seen in the episode — looks inspired by the nose of the XCV-330, albeit with some differences such as the lack of a glass dome. Exactly how the two XCV ships relate to each other isn't stated.
